Richard joined the Royal Navy 1972, transferring to the Fleet Air Arm in 1974 where he served for 25 years as an airframe/engines mechanical engineer. He was wounded during the Falklands conflict in 1982, retiring from the Royal Navy in 1996. He then gained his CAA aircraft maintenance licence and contracted for Jersey European whilst also being employed as a certifying engineer and flight test observer on the Squirrel helicopter. He went on to become an NVQ Training Officer involved in the development of general and aviation engineering personnel. He joined CTC Aviation in 2000 as a B737 technical instructor later including the B757 and 767 types. He left CTC in 2008 as easyJet moved to Airbus aircraft but continued as a contractor, also becoming an aviation technical author writing aircraft maintenance procedures and operation manuals.
